Energy Healing

Scroll Down

Some of my friends see this as my ‘woo woo’ ideas. Then again, I now have so many other people in my life, that not only believe in this, but have actually based their whole business around bringing this energy, knowledge and healing to other people.

Everything is energy. Simplistically, at our most basic make up we are molecules, which are energy particles right. They vibrate at certain frequencies. If we follow this line of thinking then interactions between people are exchanges of energy. Disease can be seen as disruptions of this energy, and healing can be done by ensuring a flow of these energies throughout the whole body and exchanging it with the world around us.

With this in mind, a lot of the alternative healings and therapies outlined below are to then related to the healer working with us to move these energies around ourself (Guided Meditation), or through them channelling healing energy through their hands or other mediums (Reiki and Acupuncture).

There are many modalities of Energy Healing across the world. This page will provide an overview of Energy Healing as an overarching concept and then provide some basic overview on:

  • Acupuncture

  • Crystal Healing, particularly the Crystal Light Bed created by St John of God

  • Sound Healing

  • Reiki

  • Reflexology

  • Massage

I may also write a blog post on my experience with a Shamanic Healer locally to myself (with her permission) who uses guided meditation, reiki, occasionally the crystal light bed and other shamanic practices to hold a space open for self healing of our energy and soul. Keep an eye out for this.

What is Energy Healing?

According to NCCIH (National Centre for Complementary and Integrative Health in the US), energy healing therapy is a technique in which a practitioner channels healing energy through their hands (or other mediums) to the clients body to restore the energy balance within. This in turn brings about purported health benefits. Energy healing may include physical touch, but this is not a requirement.

Energy healing encompasses a variety of techniques to clear blockages in the energy field of the client that could be contributing to imbalances within the client’s  life causing dis-ease, illness and mental health concerns. By breaking through these block, the body’s own ability of healing can be stimulated.

What are the benefits of Energy Healing?

Whilst scientific research on this is lacking, like traditional medicine, our ancestors have historically proven that these modalities have therapeutic benefits.

Advocates for this type of healing claim that it many health benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Reduce pain

  • Reduced anxiety and depression symptoms, which can in turn improve mood

  • Enhanced overall sense of wellbeing

  • It is readily available to everyone who is interested and willing to receive it.

History

The practice of energy healing has been around for centuries in cultures all around the world. The ancient forms of medicine in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and ayurveda, are two prime examples. In the most basic of understanding both centre around the idea that the disease is cause by imbalance of the energies within our bodies. The energy concept in TCM is qi and in ayurveda is prana.

The goals however of both these medicines are the same, to support the body to achieve balance and realign its energy to find healing.

Many indigenous cultures around the world also incorporate energy healing in their healing practices, knowing that when the energies are out of balance, illness can occur. Indigenous culture around the world using holistic healing practices treating the whole person not just the symptoms.

How to find an Energy Healing Practitioner

Most of the modalities of energy healing do not have any official regulating body. There are however various certifications and schools that are available depending on what type of healing they are providing.

This lack of regulation can make it challenging to find a trusted practitioner.

However, doing some research before jumping in with a practitioner is highly recommended.

Some questions to ask would be around the certifications courses they have completed in the methods that they offer. Also, you could ask them how many years of experience that they have. The length of time that a person has been using and developing a skill is generally a great indicator of how skilled they can be at that modality. Further to this, if you have a friend or acquaintance that can recommend you, generally this is a great way to find the right person to deal with, as the person recommending them has done the ‘dirty work’ to get to a point to know that the person knows what they are doing.

Further to finding an external practitioner, looking after your energetic health is something that you can do for yourself every day. Epsom salt baths for 20 minutes to help keep the good vibes flowing is one way. Smudging or burning sage has been suggested by advocates to help clear negativity energy from your energy field. Crystals can also help to maintain high-vibration energy, if you carry them around with you to give you a little boost of energy.

Safety and Side Effects

Energy Healing is considered a non invasive healing modality. It is generally considered to be a safe alternative to other invasive healing therapies.

Energy healing should never be a substitute for psychological or medical care for illness and mental health concerns. It can however be used in conjunction with ‘conventional’ treatments. It is crucial that you talk to your primary medical care provided ahead of any therapies you intend to seek. An holistic medical care provider will be willing to do their own research to ensure that the healing modality you are looking at undertaking is in no way going to affect any conventional therapies or medicines that you may be undertaking. Also, it is important to notify your Energy Healing Practitioner of any mental health or medical conditions you have so that they can be informed when treating you.

Everyone is going to experience energy healing in a unique way. Common sensations that you may feel during an energy healing include but are not limited to:

  • Emotional release

  • Tingling feeling throughout your body

  • Muscle twitches or tremors

  • Dizziness

  • Hot and/or cold sensations

  • Yawning or coughing

  • Deep relaxation

  • Tiredness

  • Seeing colours or images behind your eyes.

Energy healing has been considered generally safe for most people. There is however no one size fits all when it comes to these energy healing modalities.
